Subhūti

Collector Donation -Subhūti, one of the most poetic and transcendent works in the Thus I Heard series, reimagines the Buddha’s presence through depictions of fruits and vegetables. Drawing from the Diamond Sutra’s core teaching—“All appearances are illusory; if one sees all appearances as no appearances, one sees the Tathāgata”—Zuo Zhengyao forgoes the human form and instead turns to humble produce. These natural elements, born of light, time, and care, become living metaphors for impermanence and interconnectedness.

In this work, cabbage resembles mountains, melons echo drifting clouds—each still life quietly vibrating with insight. Subhūti has been formally included in the artist’s Beverly Hills Collector Private viewing. “What Does the Buddha Look Like?” was celebrated as a central statement in the series: one that reflects the Buddha not as a figure, but as the essence within all forms. More than a painting, it is a meditative invitation to perceive reality beyond illusion.

Artist introduction: Zuo Zhengyao (b. 1960) is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink and mixed‑media art. A professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and former director of its University Town Art Museum, his multi‑disciplinary practice spans ink, ceramics, installation, and video. Exhibited at major venues and consistently featured at China Guardian and Poly auctions, Zuo’s work demonstrates solid market demand and long‑term investment appeal.
