Description

Collector Donation -What Then Is Meant (Yu Yun He Yi) continues Zuo Zhengyao’s transformative approach to sacred scripture and ink painting, forming a conceptual counterpart to Thus I Heard. In this work, the artist once again transcribes the full sutra, only to dissolve it through layers of ink washes, smudging, and overwriting. The original words gradually vanish—fragmented, buried, and consumed by brushwork—leaving behind a textured field of ruins. No longer a textual narration, the painting becomes an excavation site of meaning, asking: What remains? What do you see? The title, taken from a recurring Buddhist question, turns the viewing experience into a contemplative act.

Visually abstract yet philosophically precise, this piece reflects Zuo’s masterful control over process, material, and metaphysical gesture. Included in the artist’s monograph Thus I Heard, Yu Yun He Yi is one of the central works in the series and a focal point for institutional and private collectors alike.
